Our Children’s Book of the Month

Our Children's Book of the Month is BEAR, from the brilliant mind of author-illustrator Natalia Shaloshvili.

BEAR is a laugh-out-loud, beautifully illustrated story about learning to say what you really mean before your emotions take over, and why it's best to avoid bottling up emotions, so they don't come bursting out in one big AAAAAARGH.

Older Book of the month for March

'Truly extraordinary books are rare, and this is one of them.'

RODDY DOYLE

Our Book of the Month for March is James, a profound and ferociously funny novel from one of our greatest living writers, Percival Everett.

The Mississippi River, 1861. When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a new owner in New Orleans and separated from his wife and daughter forever, he flees to nearby Jackson’s Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father who recently returned to town.

A chance to take a breath

Each month we host monthly moments for business women run by Sarah Hartley, Mindful Meet-ups with Blossom Tree Social.  The idea is to connect with female solo entrepreneurs to chat, have a coffee and complete some mindful activities such as colouring, creating or crafting.  Each month’s activity will be different.  Sarah will share top tips to become more mindful within your day to day life.  Plus, you get to connect with other female entrepreneurs in York.  Price is £8 but can vary depending on the activity.

Future meet-up dates:

Thursday March 20th at 10-11 am

Thursday April 24th at 10-11 am

Cheers for the chairs

Upstairs in the shop we can now offer you a longer more comfortable browse in our new armchairs, one big, one small, depending upon your age and, frankly, bum-width (it’s a technical seating term, honest).  Come in, grab a book, and chill till the spring in your step returns.

March is book festival month in York.  We are visiting Joseph Rowntree School on World Book Day, Thursday March 6th, to run a pop-up shop, and on three afternoons in the week St Peter’s 2-8 year olds are coming to explore round the shop.  Hot on the heels of World Book Day comes the York Literature Festival, 6-29th March with a final event on April 29th.  This year we have been asked to support the childrens’ day, two events happen on Saturday March 22nd with talks from friends of the bookshop writer Catherine Jacob and poet Olivia Mulligan, both doing readings from their latest books at Explore in York.  We will be there with copies of the books and their back catalogue!  Do come along and see us all.  Other notable appearances at the month-long festival include Sophie Hannah, Matt Haig and Susie Dent.

Remember you can buy subscriptions for three or six months worth of brand new books via our website and we will have event details and blogs there too.
